Mountain Empire Regional Wastewater Facility Project Details
The Town of Marion owns and operates a 3.4 million gallons per day treatment plant called the Mountain Empire Regional Wastewater Facility. Through this facility, the Town provides sewer service to its 3,580 residential, industrial and commercial customers.

Over time, both the water and sewer lines have deteriorated, requiring numerous repairs in recent years. The sewer lines have become congested, causing inflow and infiltration into the sewer system and increased instances of sewer backups into customers' homes.

In 2015, the Town developed its 'Comprehensive Infrastructure Replacement Program' (CIRP) to address this challenge and create a long-term plan to serve its customers by improving the dependability and efficiency of Marion's water and sewer system over the next 15 years. The CIRP will include the design and construction of water and sewer line replacements, in 15 separate phases.

Marion has been consecutively applying to both the Clean Water Revolving Loan Fund (CWRLF) and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund to meet the funding needs of its ambitious CIRP program. On May 28th, the Town closed on a $563,058 CWRLF loan with a 25-year term to successfully fund this year's phase of the multi-year capital projects, vital to the quality of life for the Town's residents and businesses.

Marion will use the CWRLF loan proceeds to fund critical infrastructure needs, including replacing approximately 2,300 linear feet of existing sewer lines, adding a new sewer pump station and procuring sewer inspection equipment to replace the existing, dated equipment that is over 20 years old and is non-operable beyond repair. This new inspection equipment will enable the Town to protect its investment, by allowing for reasonable and practical maintenance of existing sewer lines.
